SOS Children’s Villages Albania is looking for an Ombudsperson!

The National Ombuds serves as a designated neutral professional providing additional safeguarding support to the children and young people in SOS Children’s Villages Albania.
She/he is a person of trust who has the skills and interest to work through their concerns and find a solution by:
• Adhering to the principles of confidentiality, independence, informality and impartiality
• Guiding a fair process through listening and supporting
• Utilizing dispute resolution skills
• Identifying trends and making recommendations to SOS Children’s Villages Albania.
The Ombuds Office is based on a rights-based approach in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and functions on the principles of independence, impartiality, confidentiality and informality. He/she will operate independently from SOS Children’s Villages Albania and will report to the Regional Ombuds.

About you:
Requirements for the position:


  • [*=left]Have a University degree, in a relevant area such as law, social work, psychology, child rights, youth work or psychosocial wellbeing;
    [*=left]Have at least 5 years’ demonstrated experience as an Ombudsperson or closely related role in child safeguarding or child rights;
    [*=left]Experience in management and leadership; experience working in an NGO or international organization would be an asset;
    [*=left]Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the local context, including laws, policies, practices, language and social norms;
    [*=left]Possess a demonstrated ability to assess issues and matters on the basis of centrality of the child/youth, inclusion of all children and young people, children’s and victims’ rights, cultural context, policy and legislation;
    [*=left]Be able to communicate clearly to different age groups and abilities;
    [*=left]Demonstrate integrity and the ability to build trusting, compassionate relationships;
    [*=left]Excellent problem-solving and mediation skills; Excellent listening and consultation skills;
    [*=left]Pleasant and entertaining; to know how to communicate with children and be funny
    [*=left]Polite and calm; to be honest
    [*=left]Very good level of English;
    [*=left]Committed to respect confidentiality and to act independently and impartially without bias;
    [*=left]Ability to develop and implement engaging trainings and ongoing support workshops for staff and child and young people representatives ;
    [*=left]The applicant must not have been worked with SOS (being employee, provide service, etc), for at least the last two years;
Main tasks and responsibilities


  • [*=left]To receive and address concerns in a timely manner;


  • [*=left]To listen carefully to concerns, discuss an ‘action plan’, suggest next steps, guide Inquirers through the agreed process as needed, and be available for ongoing support;


  • [*=left]To help Inquirers to understand SOS processes and navigate between SOS and community structures and systems;


  • [*=left]To make referrals to appropriate SOS departments, local child protection agencies, legal advice, and/or community resources when appropriate
    [*=left]To collaborate and support children, young people and staff within their roles as Children/Young People and Staff Representatives
    [*=left]To advise senior management on any changes needed within the MA
    [*=left]To develop and maintain a confidential database that tracks concerns until they are resolved
In the framework of child protection policy:


  • [*=left]Has the responsibility to protect children from all forms of abuse, abandonment, manipulation, violence and discrimination;
    [*=left]Has the responsibility to report any suspicions, concerns, allegations or incidents regarding the safety of children immediately;
    [*=left]Has the responsibility to act without delay; delay in action can lead the child to further risks;
    [*=left]Includes the right people at the right time; ensures confidentiality and sharing of information as needed;
    [*=left]Has the responsibility to respect the Regulation on “Prevention and Protection against Sexual Harassment, Exploitation and Abuse” as well as Code of Conduct.
    [*=left]Is expected to promote and support a culture of respect, dignity, trust and accountability that deters violations.
